The meadow

Damn! Got to the allotment and realised I had forgotten the beetroot seeds. I have read that it is best to soak them in warm water before planting as this helps them germinate more quickly. So, while I was out they were left at home in a little tub ready for transporting.

Oh well, I did get other planting done: chives, lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli. The last batch of chives and lettuce do not seem to have taken but I hope this time – in less weedy ground – I will have more success. (The lettuce in the garden seems no more successful, which is a shame.)

Anyway, it had started to rain as we arrived at the plot and the few people there were on the verge of leaving. I couldn’t just sow and run, though…… I alloted myself fifteen minutes to do some ground clearance – and boy did I get soaked!!

As you can see in the photo below, from this angle Wonder World looks pretty much like a meadow. In other words, I really have a lot of work to do. At the same time, at least there is some more ground ready for growing on. I think more coverings are needed to give the crops a better chance but that is all a story for next week.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

About Helen

I have always been interesting in living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and used to do what I could. Now, I have come to realise that we have reached such a point in terms of environmental degradation that it is more important - perhaps - to focus on building resilience. I therefore do as much as I can to reuse, grow my own and encourage a supportive community, for example. I also keep reading and learning all the time.
