Pumpkin surprise

I did a couple of hours’ work at the allotment today, clearing ground of weeds so that I could (re)do some planting. It was a bit messy due to the rain over the last couple of days and I was sad that nothing seemed to be germinating or growing as I would like.

Then, as I was sorting out the ground for my runner beans I saw this:

Hurray! It is a pumpkin plant, so sowing directly into the ground has worked. No need for hardening off, either.

I’ve also got two on a windowsill at home… Great if they all flourish and produce fruit. Having made a successful pumpkin cake or two last autumn I look forward to doing the same later this year.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what appears above the ground next!

About Helen

I have always been interesting in living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and used to do what I could. Now, I have come to realise that we have reached such a point in terms of environmental degradation that it is more important - perhaps - to focus on building resilience. I therefore do as much as I can to reuse, grow my own and encourage a supportive community, for example. I also keep reading and learning all the time.
