The biggest garlic bulb ever….

to come out of my garden!

There might be advantages to clay soil, but growing fabulous root vegetables isn’t listed as one of them. The heaviness of the growing medium means they have too much to push against when forming their shapes.

I was therefore was rather surprised to see the garlic bulbs poking their heads through the ground recently. And when I came home yesterday to find them looking like this

I decided it was time to find out what they looked like further down

and was very pleased with what I found. Including the biggest garlic bulb I have ever grown. It may actually ‘only’ be the same size as a commercially grown one in the supermarket but it feels like an achievement to me.

About Helen

I have always been interesting in living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and used to do what I could. Now, I have come to realise that we have reached such a point in terms of environmental degradation that it is more important - perhaps - to focus on building resilience. I therefore do as much as I can to reuse, grow my own and encourage a supportive community, for example. I also keep reading and learning all the time.

Looks good! I haven’t had much luck with garlic but should probably give it another go. We’re on clay soil too – just been thinning some carrots and some start beautifully straight and then hit the clay below the compost enriched layer and turn a complete right angle.

Yes, give garlic another go. Maybe your clay is heavier than mine but it might be worth trying on amended soil (ie lots of compost/manure).

This year, I’m trying carrots which have round roots. So far I haven’t seen any evidence of round roots but at least they are growing ๐Ÿ™‚
