Dangers lurk indoors

I’ve been doing my best to keep the cabbage white butterflies from getting to the recently planted kale outside. To this end I acquired a mini fleece polytunnel to add to the collection of protection measures.

However, on the kitchen windowsill there is no such protection…. I thought they would be fine simply because they were safely indoors, away from any other interested parties.

But what I did notice on two of these seedlings?

Several green caterpillars which were happily munching away on the tender leaves. These caterpillars have been washed down the plughole and hopefully the seedlings are strong enough to recover but as far I am concerned you can certainly never have enough to give the best chance of getting a crop.

If all else fails and the aforementioned kale seedlings do not make a recovery, at least there is enough leaf between them to add to a stirfry.

About Helen

I have always been interesting in living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and used to do what I could. Now, I have come to realise that we have reached such a point in terms of environmental degradation that it is more important - perhaps - to focus on building resilience. I therefore do as much as I can to reuse, grow my own and encourage a supportive community, for example. I also keep reading and learning all the time.

  1. Do you grow nasturtiums – flowers, peppery leaves and will give whites somewhere to lay their eggs. 😉

  3. Oh what a drag. Best of luck with your eradication efforts.
