This year, my borage has fared very poorly. Hardy annual it might be but drought resistant, no.
However, it has started to re-emerge, now that we’ve started to get rain again. What I wasn’t expecting was to find a white borage flower amongst the purple.
I’d originally been planning to plant tulip bulbs that I bought at the Eden Project shop last month in the front garden. Then, after reading that it is best to wait till later in the autumn to do this, as it apparently reduces to chance of disease, I decided to wait a while. However, as my spade was already out, I did a bit of weeding instead.
The grass, following the lasagne gardening attempt to remove the lawn, is proving quite resilient. So, it was while I was pulling it out as best I could that I had to do a double take of the white flower.
Of course, it could be a self-sown seed from borago officinalis alba, but I am more inclined to believe it has simply mutated from the purple version. I really can’t see anyone in my vicinity growing borage – but, equally, I could be wrong.
We have the purple variety. This year it has been all leaves which smothered the flowers
Interesting!
That’s so exciting! I didn’t even know there was a white borage – I wonder whether it will come true from seed? I have it (normal blue) popping up in various places, it doesn’t seem to come up when I want, but makes it’s own mind as to when and where to appear. I do love it though.
I had a look on the internet and you can get the seeds for white borage. Maybe itβs a recessive gene and when the seeds in my garden crossed they brought out the white. Anyway, itβs nice to see any borage after missing it over the dry summer π.
I love borage and it grows in my garden though we have never planted it. It seeds itself every year without fail. Ours suffered in the drought too and is growing again.
Nice to hear from you, Clare. Borage is great for self-seeding, isnβt it!
I have never seen white borage ..

White borage seeds are available from several sources. I grew it in my Moonlight Garden for years where it self-seeded, and never reverted to blue or pink. I loved the big, fuzzy gray leaves in the moonlight! The blue flowers are much prettier on canapes though!
Thanks for letting me you can buy white borage seeds, Carolee. Blue flowers do look special, though π
