This morning when I woke up, there was a birthday surprise behind the curtains. One daylily seed had germinated, before sometime last autumn and now there is another – at last.

Anyway, there are various jobs I could have been getting on with in the garden but just as well I saved my energy to blow out the candle on the cake a friend made for me.

The flowers were both real and edible: primrose and pulmonaria. Aren’t they beautiful? And tasted nice with icing.

About Helen
I have always been interesting in living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and used to do what I could. Now, I have come to realise that we have reached such a point in terms of environmental degradation that it is more important - perhaps - to focus on building resilience. I therefore do as much as I can to reuse, grow my own and encourage a supportive community, for example. I also keep reading and learning all the time.
Happy birthday Helen. Congrats on the seedling! You have a talented friend – your cake looks wonderful.
