Black cumin

Well, I picked one of the smallest crops I’ve ever had today but it was an experiment of sorts. A few years ago, I attempted to grow cumin but as is often the way, it didn’t get watered enough. I’m sure you can guess the result.

Moving forward to this year, during lockdown I was perusing the Seed Cooperative website and took a fancy to black cumin. And this time, I was going to be more fastidious with the watering.

The flowers are pretty, though they have mostly turned to seed now. The plants are not as upright as I’d expected but at least I can gauge better how much seed to sow for future crops.

And that is what I’m going to do very soon, having seen in an email from Garden Organic that this is a plant which can be sown in September and October. Only this time, I’m going to pack in twice as much seed.

The container with the hairy bittercress (also in the photo above) was originally meant for parsley but either the slugs and snails got in or the pigeons found a way through the netting. Fortunately, the slugs et al. are probably on the wane and if I move the container nearer the house, hopefully I can ward off the birds. Besides, they might not like cumin as much as parsley.

  1. My parsley was less successful this year too. Luckily I chopped and froze a lot last year so I have some left. I must think about growing spices such as cumin. I wonder if the seeds in my jar would germinate? Might be worth a try!
